A beautiful, functional guest bedroom created on a realistic budget
Earlier this year, I decided to turn one of our spare bedrooms into a guestroom. Being the complete domestic geek that I am, I’ve always wanted to do up a guestroom. Realistically, a guestroom is a waste of space. I mean, how often do people have guests? Not often in our case. But it’s nice to have the space in case you have a long lost relative drop by out of the blue.
Before I did any actual shopping, I spent weeks searching for the right pieces at the right price. I have expensive taste but no money. Even if I had a large budget to work with, I’m not really sure I would spend $5000 on a bedroom if I could help it. Here is my version of a Splurge vs. Steal comparison of some of the key design pieces for the guest bedroom. This is based on what I would have liked to buy and what I could afford (and justify).

Now, remember I said real budget. One must be realistic about the relative cost of furniture and accessories. I could have spent $899 or more just on the mattress set and nothing else but I didn’t.I could have purchased the very similar looking Pottery Barn Bed frame for $1200 but I didn’t. The point?
You don’t have to spend thousands of dollars to get the look you want.
