Make Your Own Play Dough: Fun for Adults and Kids Alike!

by Shani

Kids love Play Dough….heck, who doesn’t like Play Dough? It’s tactile, colorful, and fun. The Play Doh brand along with many knock offs, are readily available. So why make your own? I have a few reasons…

Making your own play dough is inexpensive and it’s a fun project to do with your kids. You know exactly what is going in it so there is no need to freak out if your one year old decides to eat some of her older sister’s creations. I also challenge you to find play dough in the amazing range of colours that you can create at home.

It looks good enough to eat and you know it's safe if your kids decide to take a taste test.

Play Dough Recipe

  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 2 tbs vegetable oil
  • 2 cups of hot water (boiled and cooled slightly)
  • Food colouring
  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt and cream of tartar
  2. Add the hot water and oil to the bowl and stir well
  3. Turn dough out on a clean, lightly floured surface and knead until no longer sticky.
  4. Divide and add colours as you wish.
  5. Store play dough in airtight container or zip-lock baggies.

*Note: Let the dough cool before allowing your children to handle it. Also make sure the dough is at room temperature before storing and covering.
