Save Over $1500 by Building These PB Inspired Projects Yourself
Do you ever look at something at the store and think, gosh that is so perfect, I have to buy it? You look at the price tag and then suddenly, the item isn’t so perfect after all. Don’t despair and pass up on the item entirely, go home and knock it off. That’s what everyone is doing over at The CSI Project this week. It’s a Knock Offs Challenge and I’m going to throw my hat in the ring and participate.
Let’s start with this inspiration piece, a beautiful modular playroom storage unit from Pottery Barn Kids. I’ll get to the retail price in a minute…
Okay, minute is up. The cost? Only $1259.54 CAD. Yikes! I don’t have that kind of money to spend on a whim - do you? I said it the other day and I’ll say it again: being frugal doesn’t mean you have to settle for anything less than fabulous. Go ahead and get this beautiful system by building yourself a knock off! Here is my bigger DIY knock-off version:
The rest of my playroom needs some work! I’ll get to it eventually:-)
The cost of the knock off? Approximately $450 CAD including taxes on all materials. Not bad considering my version has two extra modules (4 bases and hutches across instead of 3).
Ready for inspiration piece number two? Check out this classic media cabinet/tv stand, also from Pottery Barn:
The cost? A whopping $1047.29 CAD. That’s kind of expensive don’t you think? It’s just a big rectangular box really. I wouldn’t fret too much if you have a hankering for this simple media cabinet because it can be knocked off for $250 CAD.
Between the media cabinet and the playroom storage, I saved $1606.83. Now that’s what I call getting the look for less!
You can get these PB inspired looks for less too. Check out the related posts below for information on where to find the plans (Thanks ana-white.com!) etc.

These furniture pcs are amazing! Gorgeous work Shani!! Where did you get the nice storage boxes shown on your shelf?
Hey Mar! Thank you for stopping by. I totally forgot to email you pics of the finished media cabinet. Oh well, now you’ve seen it!
The storage boxes are part of the Martha Stewart line at Home Depot. They come in several different colours and cost $6.99 each. They happen to fit my storage unit perfectly which is great.
Hi Shani
The units look great, and the colours make it stand out really well. It’s amazing how much you can save with a little effort!
Thank you Helen! I’m super happy with how the project turned out and it was definitely worth all the hard work:-)
