If you haven’t already noticed, we’ve been busy working on our basement family room, also known as the “Media Room”. Since moving in two years ago, the media room has gone from an empty underutilized space to a makeshift workshop for all my crazy furniture building/makeover projects. Now that the TV cabinet and matching bookcases are finished, we’re ready to say goodbye to the mess so we can start decorating!
This is what the room looked like while under construction just a few weeks before we moved in. Pardon the dust.
So far we have managed to throw together our old sofa bed, a hand me down Berber area rug and a leather ottoman to create a makeshift sitting area. It’s cozy enough for now. There are a lot of things on our wishlist including a small sectional or sofa/chaise combo, accent chairs, lighting and so on.
Oh well, the sparse decor just accents our gorgeous DIY Media Cabinet and refinished bookcases! The TV is pretty nice too:-)
What’s with the green tape? Are we painting the floor? Nope! We needed help visualizing the ideal rug size so we taped out an 8 x 10 on the floor. Yes, we are that dorky! We laugh at ourselves all the time.
Speaking of rugs, that is the first thing we’re going to get for this space. Being a basement, the floor is super cold and hard! We borrowed the Berber rug from the adjacent playroom and I would really like to give it back to the kids so they don’t freeze their little toes off.
And so the rug hunting begins…
I really liked with this Debbie Travis one available at Canadian Tire. It’s neutral, the pattern is fab and the price is good too - $129! Unfortunately it’s only available in a 5 x 7. Ashli at Maillardville Manor recently featured this rug which is sitting in her gorgeous home library.
This one from Ikea caught my eye but at 6 x 7, the size wasn’t right for our room either.
Here’s another contender. This budget rug is from Home Depot. I thought the Debbie Travis rug was affordable - this one by Mohawk is only $99.00. We liked the pattern and the neutral colours but it felt too thin for our needs and other reviewers mentioned it was hard to keep the rug flat.
I saved the best for last. This area rug is from the Martha Stewart Living line at Home Depot. It’s neutral, 100% wool and reasonably priced at $350 (compared to $1000 that is). Hubby and Wife both agree that this rug is “the one”.
The only thing stopping us from running out and ordering the rug is the fact that I hate paying full price for anything. I know that if I buy the rug tomorrow, it will go on sale the following week. (I also know that when you really want something it feels like it will never go on sale!)
