Train to run 10K and feel great!
For years I’ve attempted training to run 10K but there always seemed to be some distraction that would run me off course. Having a seriously ill child and struggling with Graves disease…big things that make sticking to a fitness goals a bit hard.
This summer, I decided to challenge myself once more to learn to run 10K. In less than 13 weeks I have finally reached my goal and I feel great!
How did I do it?
To reach my goal I followed the Learn to Run 10K program by Sport Med BC which is used by many to train for the popular Vancouver Sun Run. Because I was already running 2-3 times a week, I found the program a bit slow to begin with. However I stuck with it and found myself looking forward to my early morning runs. I highly recommend the program if you are interested in learning to run 10K. There is also a walk/run option included in the schedule.
People always ask me how I find time to train. If you’re a mom you know that finding time for yourself is next to impossible. It’s easy to not exercise because you have too much to do or you’re just feeling exhausted at the end of the day. If you want to learn to run 10K you must make time for the training.
Personally the only way I could fit in training was to get up early and run before everyone else woke up. So yeah, I was up and ready to train at 6:00am. It sounds awful but it’s not. You get use to it and soon you’ll find yourself wanting to get up to run rather than dreading it.
Now what?
Well I’m not interested in training for a marathon but I would like to work on my speed and endurance. Naturally my next fitness challenge is to learn to run 10K faster!
