I‘m really excited to tell you about my latest DIY project. I’m amazed I haven’t thought about this sooner. This is what being house poor does to people. You become very resourceful and learn to find ways to reuse, recycle or redesign stuff.
First, let me tell you about the room I’m currently working on. It’s the media room in our basement but I’m hoping it will become more of a family room/entertainment area. I started working on a media cabinet awhile ago and was planning on building base units and hutches to flank the cabinet on each side.
Let’s be honest, I love building my own furniture but realistically, it’s really hard to get anything done around here. So instead of building the cabinets and hutches from scratch, I’m going to attempt an Ikea hack instead!
Do the bookcases look familiar?
Good old Billy bookcases have been around since 1979! I’ve had mine for 9 years. In fact, I own three of them and they were a total steal. I bought them during a grand store opening for $29.99 each. That’s less than what one Billy bookcase currently costs at full price ($99).
The grand scheme is to prep and prime the bookshelves, add some trim and give them a few coats of paint to match my media cabinet.
