Building Step by Step
If you have been drooling over the amazing projects at ana-white.com but feel intimidated about starting one on your own, don’t. I have no experience building furniture from scratch and I am amazed by how easy my playroom storage project is coming together.I think the key is to plan ahead and go slowly, step by step.
Being a busy mom of two, it’s hard to set aside a large chunk of time to work on the furniture. I’m not going to lie to you, woodworking requires concentration and time. Don’t attempt to build furniture with your kids around. Safety comes first and although I’m sure it’s a give in, kids and power tools don’t mix.
Be realistic. If you are going to build something large like a media wall or storage unit while juggling day to day chores and meeting the needs of your family, know that you are not going to finish it overnight or even in one weekend. Plan on doing a little bit at a time.
Remember, I’ve never built anything from scratch before and I think I’m doing okay so far. If I can do it, so can you!
This is what I’ve accomplished
1.) Join the side pieces to the bottom of the cubby base as per Ana’s plans. I used Elmer’s Carpenter Glue and # 8 x 2 screws for particle boards.
If you’re not sure what it means to “countersink” your screws, watch Ana’s video instructions. I bought a countersink bit for #8 screws but I snapped it while practicing on an extra piece of MDF. My dad lent me his spare countersink bit which looks more like the one in this informative video.
This is what a countersunk screw looks like. Notice how the screw sits below the surface of the MDF? Countersinking allows you to use wood filler to cover up your screw holes for a more professional finish.
2.) Be sure to check that your project is square. Again, Ana at Knock Off Wood has a great video on how to do this.
Pretty easy so far right? It didn’t take me long to join the sides to the bottom of all 4 of my storage bases. Here is a picture of my handy work so far. More to come soon!
