After a whirlwind affair with quilting, I’ve found yet another thing to “get into”.
Old habits die hard. In my case, overindulgence during the holidays and a penchant for crafting. Thankfully I’ve found a way to curb my cravings for sugary, butter filled treats and satisfy my need to create. Instead of baking, I am now crocheting treats - cupcakes to be exact.
My latest interest is Amigurumi, the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting stuffed animals or small toys. The only reason why I succumb to this craft is because I picked out two Amigurumi books for my 10 year old niece as a Christmas gift. She is new to crochet but I thought, why not start them young? She’ll pick up the Amigurumi art form in no time and all her friends will be admiring her nifty handiwork. Alas, if it were only as simple as that! Silly me, I kind of forgot that the young one might not actually know how to read a crochet pattern. I completely took it for granted that I’ve just known how to read patterns since well, I can’t even remember how long it’s been!
I decided to take a look at the book and make something small for her. It’s hard for a 10 year old to visualize that a big tangled mess of yarn will become a monkey or a cupcake in my case.
I crocheted my cupcake from leftover scraps of yarn, hence the very minty green. The pattern I followed was very easy but you must have some basic crochet and pattern reading knowledge.
I like the simple look of the cupcake but I’m going to try making one with a swirly icing top. As with real cupcakes, the possibilities are endless! I’m thinking about crocheting half a dozen cupcakes for my other niece who is turning 7.

I’ve been doing amigurumi too…AND I did a cupcake that looks very similar, although my leftover scrap of yarn was lilac.
I was just about to head over to your blog because i remember reading a post about crocheting! I finally splurged and bought some decent coloured yarn to make the gifts for my niece!
