Impress Your Guests with Scrumptious Cheese Buns

These cheesy buns have a slight pizza flavour and are a refreshing alternative to dinner rolls

My dinner contribution for a mother’s day celebration with my in-laws was suppose to be individual cheese buns. I somehow ended up with an amazing tray of cheesy pull apart buns with a savory pizza flavour. Oh yum, they were good! So good that they barely made it to the dinner table. Instead, my sister-laws called dibs and packed most of the the buns away for their kids to enjoy for lunch the next day.

Cheesy Pizza Pull-Apart Buns

You will need to make one batch of the basic dough from the recipe provided in the cinnamon bun post. Click here to review the recipe.

  • 2 1/2 cups of grated cheese (more if you like)
  • 4 tbs of tomato paste
  • 2 tsp of garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 tbs of oregano
  • 1 egg lightly beaten

Instructions:

Combine tomato paste, garlic powder and oregano and set aside. Roll out your dough into a large rectangle approximately 16in x 12in. Spread the tomato paste evenly onto the dough, leaving a 1 inch border all around. Sprinkle 1 1/2 cups of the cheese onto the dough. Starting from the bottom of the rectangle, roll your dough into a tight log. Be sure to pinch the sides together as you roll to prevent the filling from falling out. Pinch the top end to the log to create a seal. (Review How to: Make Irresistible Cinnamon Rolls for detailed instructions and photos)

Slice log into 18 even pieces and arrange in a 15″ x 10″ parchment line baking pan. Cover with a clean tea towel and let rise in a warm, draft free place for 1 1/2 to 2 hours or until the buns have doubled in bulk. Brush the egg onto the of the buns and sprinkle the remaining cheese on top. Bake in the centre of the oven at 375F for approximately 20-25 minutes. Remove and let cool on a wired rack.

Almost ready to pop into the oven

More cheese!

Tip: Not sure if your buns are done? try tapping on the bottom of your baking pan…if it sounds hollow, then you are good to go!

For a “healthier” version, replace 1 cup of the all purpose flour with whole wheat. Both versions taste great!
